How to Choose the Correct Cake Box Size

A too-tight box ruins buttercream; a too-loose one lets the cake slide. Here's how to get the size right first time.

1. Measure the cake, not the tin

Measure the finished, decorated cake — icing, drips and toppers included — not the baking tin. A "6-inch cake" is often 7 inches or more once decorated.

2. Add room for the cake board

Your box needs to fit the board, which usually extends beyond the cake. Measure the board diameter and use that as your minimum base size.

3. Height is the most common mistake

Measure from the base of the board to the very top of the cake — including toppers if they'll be in the box. Tall and tiered cakes usually need a dedicated tall box with a handle or lift-off design.

4. Think about how it travels

If cakes are delivered, a snug base grip and a sturdy board matter more than anything. Windowed lids let customers see the cake without opening the box.

5. When in doubt, ask with measurements

Send your cake's base size and total height to the studio and the right box size can be confirmed before you order. See Paper Crew's custom cake boxes for what can be made.
